Burger: Recreation |
The project was to create a burger as close as possible to the original one (left). We were to use the shape tools in Illustrator to create the shapes in the burger and to gauge the colors by eye. The original burger is on the left and the one I made is on the right.
Parmigianos: Recreation
The project was to create a Parmigianos logo as close as possible to the original one (left). We were to use the shape tools and pen tool in Illustrator to create the different aspects of the logo, including the shadows and letters. We also had to gauge the colors by eye. The original logo is on the left and the one I made was on the right.

Elements and Principles Logo Analysis
We were to look at 4 logos and to analyze them. We had to write which elements and principles of art they used and how they used them.
The Adidas logo uses lines for the letters. It also uses value of the white background to create contrast to with the positive space and make the shapes and letters stand out. The shapes are proportional to each other. There is a bit of movement in the logo when you look at the shapes and how their tops almost form a line. The shapes also form a pattern and rhythm.
The Jinteki logo uses different lines to create the shape of a tree. Like the Adidas logo, it uses the value of the white background to create contrast with the positive space of the tree and make it stand out. It has informal balance as it is asymmetrical. There are organic shapes in this logo. As organic shapes usually correspond with nature, this emphasizes that this logo is connected with nature (especially as it is a tree).
The Shaper logo uses various types of lines to create different organic shapes which references its name, Shaper. While all the lines create a shape, the type of line and the shape it makes varies. It uses a thicker line at the top of the rhombus which thins out at the bottom. There is a thin line in the middle that forms a triangle. There is a textured, curved line that makes a ring that loops between the rhombus and the triangle. It uses the value of the white background to contrast with the green shapes and make it stand out. It uses formal balance as it is mostly symmetrical except for the ring.
The UPS logo uses solid lines to create the geometric shape of the shield. The shield represents the reliability of UPS and that it will always get what you want delivered on time. The brown of the background contrasts with the yellow of the positive space to make it stand out. It uses formal balance as the shield is mostly symmetrical. There is a little movement in the shaded in part of the shield.
Flag Redesign
The Flag of Utah (left: original; right: redesign)
We were to redesign an already existing flag into a better one. I looked up information about Utah and saw that its main agricultural products were corn, wheat, and barley. Because of this, I created symbols on the flag of these three crops to represent Utah's agriculture. I used yellow and green as they are the colors of these crops. I used a pale yellow as the background as Utah has a large number of deserts. I made sure that unlike the original flag, there were no words on my redesign and that the flag is simple.
Personal Typeface
My personal inspiration for this typeface was my love of math. I incorporated this into a design by marking up the letters with geometric symbols such as marking congruent lines, congruent angles, right angles, and parallel lines. I also added some geometric/mathematical elements to the letters such as adding arrows to parts of the letters to make lines or rays, making the uppercase U a parabola, making the uppercase V an angle, and demonstrating the Alternate Interior Angle Theorem with both Zs. The design overall was very successful, and I am proud of it. In my opinion, the letters look good together and have a sort of unity together. If I were to do this assignment over again, I would try to have a more consistent x-height for descenders. I would also give a bit more "descending" space for descenders and have a little less space in between letters.
Logo Design
- Creative Brief (for Logo Design) -
Client: Whom are you designing this for?
I am designing this for Cathy Fitzgerald, the owner of Cathy’s Kitchen.
Background: How was the company founded? When? By whom? Where?
It was founded in 1968 by Cathy’s parents in Nashville, Tennessee.
Project overview: What is your customer asking for specifically? What are your goals? What are the needs of the customer? What can you take “creative leadership” on?
Cathy is asking for a design the references the store’s new style, new-American with hints of rustic. My goal is to attract younger customers for her. She needs a logo that is attractive to younger, potential customers. I can take “creative leadership” on the main design of the logo and its colors as long as they reference the restaurant in some way. I can also take creative leadership on whether to use the full name of the restaurant or to just use “Cathy’s”.
Goal: What is the purpose of this design? Why are you being contacted to create this design?
The purpose of this design is to attract younger customers and to let potential customers know that this is a warm and inviting restaurant. I am being contacted to create this design because Cathy requires a new, more contemporary logo.
Target audience: Whom is this company serving? Whom is it aiming to serve?
This company is serving customers that want American cuisine and enjoy the nostalgic yet contemporary décor. The company is aiming to serve younger customers.
Message & Tone: When the audience looks at this design, what words/feelings should come to mind? What should this logo convey or stand for?
The words “warm,” “inviting,” “new-American,” “rustic,” and “contemporary” should come to mind. The logo should convey the message that the restaurant is warm and inviting.
Visuals: Were images provided? For what reason? How will you use these? Can/should you use visuals in the logo design?
Images were provided so that I base the logos off of the interior of the restaurant. I will use them to base my design and colors off of. I should use visuals that are relevant or useful in the logo design.
Specifics Needed: What do you have to include? What can you not include?
I have to include either “Cathy’s Kitchen” or “Cathy’s” in the design. I also have to include the established date (1968) in the design as well. My color scheme has to be based on the interior decor. There is not much that I explicitly cannot include, but I should not make the logo too complicated or have too many words on it.

For this project, we had to design a logo for Cathy's Kitchen based on a certain criteria given by "Cathy". The logo could either have the name "Cathy's Kitchen" or just "Cathy". It also had to have the year the restaurant was established, 1968, on it. The colors should be based on aspects of the restaurant as well. We needed to have two designs with different fonts and color themes and monochrome versions of both designs. For my first design, I based it off of the red brick walls of the restaurant. I made the letters the height of two bricks and made the width the same for all of them (1 inch on Illustrator). I put the establishment date inside a brick at the bottom to make it look like the date was carved on the brick. The monochrome version of the first design is simply the same design with any saturation (so on a greyscale). For my second design, I changed the red to the blue as the restaurant also had a good deal of blue in it. However, the blue in the restaurant was kind of dark, so I darkened everything in the design by 10% (brightness) as well. I changed the font of the date, but as I made the letters of the name of the restaurant myself, I did not change as much. I only changed the apostrophe and the "I". Like for my first design, I set all the saturations to 0 to make the monochrome version for my second design.
Digital Collage
For this project, we needed to make a digital collage with inspiration from some literature. I chose the quote “He [Bilbo] used often to say there was only one Road; that it was like a great river: its springs were at every doorstep, and every path was its tributary.” This is why I had a river with different branches of water coming from doorsteps. We also had to incorporate text onto our collage, so I chose part of a poem from Lord of the Rings. Furthermore, we needed to incorporate two elements and two principles of design into our collage, so I chose line, color, contrast, and movement. We had to have a color palette, which for me, consisted of blue, green, grey, tan, and yellow. In Photoshop, we needed to have at least three adjustment layers (I had A LOT - at least 12) and at least one filter (I had three).
CD Cover
For this project, we created a CD cover (front and back with spine) based on a musician that we made up and his music style. I made up "The Strategist" (which is based on my logical and strategic personality). The album is called "Board Gamer" and contains 9 songs based on board games and card games. We had to have a picture of ourselves, so I included my head on a wise and tactical (one could say strategical) character from one of the card games a song was based on. I made the backgrounds the backs of two types of cards from another card game and connected the two with a portal. I also added tokens and cards depicting pieces/characters from the games as well. There also had to be interaction between the front and back covers, so I added the portal to connect the two. The first picture is the original CD cover, while the second picture is the one I put a filter over so that the pictures would seem better together. The third picture is a cover for the disk itself, which I did for extra credit. In the Extra Credit section is a song I made for extra credit as well (heavily inspired by a card game).
Website Design
For this project, we had to come up with an idea for a company and then create a website for the company. My company is called Teleportal and sells teleporters. After coming up with an idea, we had to create a logo for the company. My logo (above), shows the Earth with portals on both sides and an arrow going across the Earth through the portals. This signifies the teleporters' abilities to travel and go anywhere on the Earth - even across the world!
After we created the logo, we had to sketch out an idea of what the website would look like. There were 4 pages to do, Home, About Us, Contact Us, and a product page. Then, we had to create a wireframe of our sketch. This meant a version of it on the computer (which I made using Adobe Illustrator) with boxes for pictures and text. Here is a picture of mine below:

After the wireframe was complete, we had to do a full mockup (bottom, right), adding in all of the pictures and colors. Because I was in honors, I also had to create a mobile version of the website (bottom, left) where the elements had to be adjusted to fit a smaller, narrower screen We also had to have a drop down menu, which I used for the products button. On the mobile mockup, descriptions for the founders of the company are displayed when the icons are tapped, but are not displayed in the image below. Click on the pictures to expand them and see the complete picture.
